Start with the surface. Keep the cuddles.
A useful cleanup routine begins with the material you’re cleaning. Before choosing a tool, read the fabric care label and the product’s compatibility instructions.
1. Check what the fabric allows
Look for restrictions on brushing, friction, moisture, and cleaning products. Delicate, damaged, knitted, and loosely woven fabrics need extra care. If the tool is not specifically approved for the material, choose a different method.
2. Test a hidden area
Use gentle pressure on an inconspicuous area. Stop if you see snagging, pilling, color transfer, or changes to the texture.
3. Match the routine to the space
- Sofas and bedding: check the upholstery or fabric label and select a tool intended for that material.
- Car seats: identify whether the seat is fabric, leather, or another material. A tool suitable for carpet may not be suitable for the seat.
- Clothing: inspect the weave and care instructions before using an adhesive roller or a brush.
4. Reset the tool correctly
Different hair removers use different mechanisms. Some collect fur in a chamber; some use a washable adhesive surface. Empty, wipe, rinse, and dry only as directed by the exact product’s instructions.
